This is my senior year at FSU and the expectations were high for the football team, but I think we as fans became spoiled by winning. My first two years we either won the CIAA championship or we either were runner-ups. It seems to me that the mentality of the teams of previous seasons is not the same as the mentality of this year's team. This year's team is complacent and unfocused, and it shows on the field. The pounding they took against North Carolina Central was expected. Many of the fans went to the game just to see if we would score. But the effort given on the field left a sour taste in the mouths of fans and alumni.
The first half started off promising but quickly turned bitter, with the broncos committing 3 turnovers that led to 21 points. The FSU defense didn't seem to be on the same page the entire game. "We spot them 21 points on three turnovers," said Coach Kenny Phillips. "You're kind of climbing up out of a well laced with grease."
The Eagles offense was running on all cylinders. Their passing game was consistent and their running game was efficient.
Bronco quarterback Jonathan Autry's pass on the second play of the game was picked off by Eagle defensive back Craig Amos for a 37-yard return, which led to a five-yard touchdown run by NCCU half back Corey Brown.
Eagles place-kicker Brandon Gilbert connected on his 54th straight extra-point kick to make the score NCCU 7-0 with 12:22 remaining in the first quarter.
The Eagle's defense knocked Autry out of the game with an injury to his hand. Kyle Horton replaced him. With 8:40 remaining in the second quarter, NCCU senior safety Andre George stepped in front of a pass by Horton and returned the interception 60 yards for an NCCU defensive touchdown. Horton finished the contest 9-of-21 for 79 yards and three interceptions.
The second half of the game was better for the Broncos. They scored on a 5-yard touchdown run by Amir Holding, the extra point attempt failed. After that, the game continued to go down hill. The Eagles put up 28 points in the second half to blow the broncos out 49-6. The only bright spot came from Charles Futrell who was one of Cumberland County's shining high school football players. He returned to Fayetteville as one of NCCU's many weapons. He finished the game with 98 yards receiving and a touchdown.
The Bronco's season has been anything but impressive at a miserable 2-5 and 1-3 in conference play. It has been a season full of defensive and offensive woes. The football team is not focused and lacks discipline. The team's focus seems to be on less on winning and more on impressing the women on campus and partying.
