Have you ever walked into a coffee shop and been completely overwhelmed by your choices? Did you turn right back around and go to a more familiar place for a soda? Or did you try to figure out what everything was before ordering a regular coffee, doctoring it just as you would at home and wondering why it cost you so much? Believe it or not, not everyone is as familiar with mochas and lattes as it may seem. Here, a basic list of different drinks and what's in them:
americano: espresso and hot water
cappuccino: espresso, steamed milk, and foamed milk
espresso: "a fresh espresso shot forms three layers: the aromatic cream, the billowing body, and the dark, intense heart", as quoted by Starbucks
latte: espresso and steamed milk
mocha: espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate or mocha syrup
white mocha: espresso, steamed milk, and white chocolate syrup
Then, to make it even more confusing, most coffee shops will throw in their "specialty" drinks, usually changing them seasonally. Starbucks has their caramel macchiato year-round, which has espresso, vanilla, caramel, and foamed milk in it. Caribou Coffee has sweet drinks like the turtle mocha and caramel high rise.
If all that's not bad enough, during the holidays, many will add eggnog lattes and peppermint mochas to their already lengthy menu. Although it makes some heads spin trying to figure out what it is, all they do is add the mentioned flavoring to the basic drink.
So.... why are coffee shops so popular and so chic these days? Not only are you able to get your new favorite drink and warm up with the weather getting colder and colder, but many offer free wireless Internet. The chairs are often oversized and comfortable. It is a great place to go to study or read a book or newspaper without the distractions that you have at home.
All this being said, it's no wonder why Fayetteville has been building coffee shops around town so quickly. Until recently, most of us could count on one hand how many coffee shops existed in this town. Now there is Starbucks, Rude Awakening, The Coffee Scene, Griffin's, Joe Muggs, The Lawyer's Den, Village Coffee House...the list goes on and on.
