School of Education Dean Appointed at FSU
A Harvard-educated scholar has been selected as the new dean of Fayetteville State University's (FSU) School of Education. The appointment was announced Thursday by Dr. Juliette B. Bell, FSU Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Leontye L. Lewis will assume the dean's position July 23, 2007. Prior to joining FSU, Dr. Lewis served as director of the School of Education at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. As an administrator and tenured faculty member at Coppin State, Dr. Lewis was responsible for working with the chairpersons and faculty members within four departments housed in the School of Education - Adult and General Education; Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; Curriculum and Instruction; and Special Education. She was also responsible for the daily supervision of the academic departments within the School of Education, including the completion of federal and state reports that pertain to the school and the training of teachers.
At FSU, Dr. Lewis will oversee the departments of Educational Leadership and Foundations; Elementary Education; Health, Physical Education and Human Services; and Middle Grades, Secondary, and Special Education. She will also supervise four department chairs and a faculty of 60 full-time and part-time instructors, and assist with guiding the strategic direction of the School of Education.
"Fayetteville State University conducted a nationwide search to find a scholar who can continue the tradition and success our School of Education has enjoyed over the years," Bell said. "We also wanted to find someone who can help FSU do its part in addressing the critical need we have for teachers in this state. We have found that individual in Dr. Lewis. She is highly regarded in education circles and brings a wealth of knowledge to FSU. Our already stellar faculty in the School of Education will continue to thrive under her leadership."
Dr. Lewis earned a teaching certificate from Church Teacher's College in Mandeville, Jamaica, West Indies, and a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Coppin State. She received a master's in curriculum and instruction from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Dr. Lewis went on to receive a second master's in learning and teaching from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, and a doctorate in teaching, curriculum, and learning environments from Harvard. Dr. Lewis' doctoral dissertation focused on the practices of inner-city teachers who apply parent involvement strategies to promote academic achievement.
